ROME (AP) - Italian national team forward Francesco Totti broke his leg in Sunday\'s Italian league game between AS Roma and Empoli and will need 2-3 months to recover, but should return for the World Cup in June, his surgeon said.
\"It was a serious injury ... but we are optimistic about the World Cup,\'\' said Dr. PierPaolo Mariani, who operated on Totti for more than two hours at a local clinic.
The World Cup in Germany begins June 9 with Italy scheduled to play Ghana, the Czech Republic and the United States in the first round.
\"He\'s a very important player for the national team. It would be a pity not to have him in the World Cup. We will be waiting for him and will do everything possible to recover him in time,\'\' Italy coach Marcello Lippi said.
The 29-year-old Totti was injured 12 minutes after kickoff, straining ligaments in his left ankle and fracturing his fibula when tackled from behind.
Roma coach Luciano Spalletti said the serious of the injury was apparent instantly.
\"Francesco also realized it, and immediately said \'I\'m broken,\'\'\' Spalletti said.
Roma won the match 1-0 to match a Serie A record with its 10th straight victory, but Totti was carried off on a stretcher.
\"Totti did not deserve this ... today\'s feast has been spoiled by a great grief,\'\' Roma\'s managing director Rossella Sensi said in tears.
Totti, who has 15 goals for Roma this season, has played 45 times for Italy, scoring eight goals. Looking to earn international recognition at the World Cup, Totti had expressed concern about his fitness.
\"My ankles are swollen because I get too many kicks from rival defenders,\'\' Totti said in a recent interview. \"I can hardly play every weekend. I hope the World Cup is not at risk for me.\'\'
The Roman-born Totti is considered the flagship for the yellow-and-red Roman club for which he has been playing since 1992. |
